Golden Globes 2017

NOTE: Yes, I know the Oscars are starting any minute, which makes this post about 89 awards shows late. However, I did start writing this the day after the Globes and figured it was worth posting. A little more brief than past years, but technically, my annual streak is still in tact!

So many great films this year. (If you’re asking, my personal favorite was Hell or High Water, but I think the best film of the year was Moonlight.) And there were some great looks to kick-off the awards season. My picks for the 2017 Golden Globes … Continue reading

Golden Globes 2016

On Monday, college football season came to a close with yet another National Championship for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Lewis Hamilton scored the trifecta with another World Championship this past Formula One season (and I was lucky enough to watch him clinch it in Austin in October). Will we see another repeat winner on the red carpet this awards season?

Sunday’s nights Golden Globes put us on the right foot for the fashion season. It was refreshing to see some newcomers on the carpet, but I missed some of our usual favorites – Charlize Theron, Zoe Saldana, Emma Stone. Regardless, there were some shining stars.

Whereas last year was all about the sheer dress, the naked dress, the “put some damn clothes on” dress, our ladies were pretty covered up at the Globes. (Well, except for their sternums and midriffs.) When it came to accessories, celebrities followed Coco Chanel’s philosophy of taking off one piece of jewelry before leaving the house. Overall, the looks were elegant and understated, hair and makeup included.

Golden Globes 2015 Recap

Thanks to my alma mater playing in the first ever College Football Playoffs National Championship game, I actually missed watching the live coverage of this year’s Golden Globes. After experiencing a disappointing loss by my beloved Oregon Ducks, it took several days to get over my sadness. Alas, the fashion coverage must go on! Time to get down to red carpet business. I’ve reviewed all the scouting reports and game tape and am now ready to share my red carpet review.

Golden Globes 2014 Recap

College football season is over. Formula 1 doesn’t start up again until March. However, a new season has begun — awards season. And that means RED CARPET EXTRAVAGANZA! The season kicked off with the Golden Globes last Sunday. It’s been a stellar year for film, but I’m sad to report that I was overall underwhelmed with the fashion. However, there were a few standouts. And now, ladies and gentlemen, the winners of the 3rd Annual Beautypendence Golden Globes recap are …

Golden Globes 2013 Recap

One of my favorite pastimes is watching the red carpet. I am a fanatic for haute couture gowns. But, alas, I no longer have cable, and hence, I don’t get to watch E!’s pre-awards show coverage like the good ole days of yore. However, my recap of last year’s Golden Globes was one of the most fun to write, so I decided I wouldn’t deny myself the pleasure of (nit)picking last night’s fashion. But I must add the disclaimer that without having seen the fashion in action, waltzing down the carpet, my analysis is based solely on still photos.

BEST RISKIEST CHOICE: Lucy Liu

This dress is one that a lot of people won’t like, but I totally love it. Yes, it’s reminiscent of wallpaper you’d find hung in the family dining room of a 19th century house, but somehow Lucy Liu is pulling off this dress. The shape is classic ball gown as done by Carolina Herrera, but the bold, floral print is unexpected and gorgeous. Lucy’s long, fishtail braid brings a modern touch to the look. And with so much going on in the dress, it was smart to select simple, diamond drop earrings as her only jewelry.

Golden Globes 2012 Fashion Recap

In addition to my love of beauty and fashion, I have a lifelong adoration of film. Nearly every weekend, you can find me at the best movie house on the planet, Alamo Drafthouse.  So when awards season rolls around, its like Christmas morning for me. I live for red carpet fashion. Here are some of my own personal awards from last night’s Golden Globes:

BEST LOOK OF ETHEREAL PRETTINESS: Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron is my top woman crush, and I love her sense of style. At the 2000 Academy Awards, she had one of the best red carpet moments of all time wearing tangerine Vera Wang with 1920s-inspired pin-curled hair. While she hasn’t quite matched that, she rarely misses (except for that cinnamon roll Dior disaster at the 2010 Oscars). Last night she mastered a heavenly look in this blush pink Dior Couture gown with soft side-swept hair adorned with a jeweled headband. She looked like she was floating on the red carpet.
